Proud 2B Here! Bovey Tracey, Brimley and Heathfield Flag Project 2018

THIS year will be the fifth year of having flags in Bovey Tracey. Initially funded by Bovey Tracey Town Council and the Tracey Almshouse Trust, this exciting community project enables local businesses and community organisations to create their own unique, large-scale colourful flags that enhance the whole area and make it more attractive to residents, visitors and potential new businesses. There are nearly 50 flags going up in this summer in

time for major local events including the Contemporary Craft Festival, Carnival Week and the Nourish Festival. The flags each tell a story about the business or

organisation and reflect a sense of place. They are mainly designed and sewn by local people from participating groups, including The Community Garden, local churches and Bovey Primary School. Flag design and making is supported by wonderful volunteers, and led by the Community Artist, Bridget Arnold. The flags are made of high quality, colourful balloon material (rip stop nylon) and sewn twice (straight and zig-zag stitches) with polyester thread, with Vilene reinforcement for the pole holder. Pole holders are made by a local blacksmith, and the ash and hazel poles have been coppiced from local woods. From 2018, Bovey Futures will be helping to secure

ongoing funding and sponsorship from local businesses to make it possible for the flags to go up again in the town as well as to expand the project to new places in the parish.
