Pétanque Club Bovey Tracey

BOVEY Tracey Petanque club play on their Piste at BT AFC Ground in St Johns Lane, Bovey Tracey every Sunday afternoon from 2pm through until 4pm or 5pm depending on the weather. This is a friendly afternoon where the emphasis is on social activity and fun. The club also hosts games twice a month for Bovey Tracey Activities Trust on a Thursday. Last year was another excellent year for the club having won the South Devon Twinning Petanque

League Shield for the 16th consecutive year. Pictured left is team captain Mike Browne receiving the League Shield from Mrs Ware-Owen at the presentation dinner. During the year the club also won four out of seven individual club trophies

in the South Devon Twinning Petanque League. The club also won the Memorial Trophy which is played for outside the

league scoring system to remember all those players who are no longer with us. Pictured below with this year’s winnings are, from left, Mike Watson (club treasurer and coordinator), Andrew Collett, Keith Lockett, Mike Browne (team

captain), Julia Browne (secretary), Pauline Glover, Sara Such (chairman) and Brian Stockman.

The concept: The sport is played with metal balls and a jack

and can be played by teams of three players (triples), two players (doubles) or a straight head-to- head between two single players. The object of each end is to get more of your

boules closer to the jack than your opponent (each one that is closer scores one point) and the team/player to reach the score being played for first wins the game. The game is suitable for any one from about eight years of age onwards. Some of the members only play in the friendly games on a

Sunday while others play in a more serious but still very friendly competition in the league games. The club is open to anyone who would like to try their hand at

this very easy game played in a friendly competitive manner. Anyone interested in trying the sport is welcome to come along

on a Sunday afternoon and try it out, no equipment is required. Please contact the treasurer Mike Watson on 01626 832888 or email mgtwatson@aol.com for further details.
