Welcome to Bovey Tracey

WELCOME to the 2018 edition of the Bovey Tracey Town Guide and we hope this guide will provide important local information for residents and help visitors to enjoy their visit to the town. Bovey Tracey is a unique place

– a magnet that attracts visitors from around the world throughout the year. Bovey Tracey nestles on the

south-east edge of Dartmoor National Park. Set amidst beautiful countryside,

the town’s history can be traced back to Saxon times, with links to the English Civil War as well as the pottery and railway industries. In 2010, Bovey Tracey

celebrated its 750th anniversary of the signing of its Market and Fair Charter by Henry III in 1260. Close to Bovey Tracey is

Heathfield, which is a substantial residential and significant business area within the parish. Nearby is Bovey Heath, the site of an English Civil War battle. Local legend tells that in 1646 during the civil war, Cromwellian troops reputedly surprised Royalist officers who were drinking and playing cards in a house in East Street thought to be Front House Lodge. On making a hasty exit, one of the Royalists had the idea of grabbing a pile of money from the card table and throwing it out

fought the following day with Cromwell winning 400 horses and capturing seven regimental colours. Today, Bovey Heath is a haven for rare plants and wildlife, which is now owned and managed by Devon Wildlife Trust.
