NEWS NPA IN FOCUS

PharMacy SEcUrIty We at the nPa were shocked to learn of a few weeks ago of more violent attacks on pharmacies in northern Ireland. Police are investigating a possible link between the January 20 armed robberies, which must have been terrifying for the pharmacy teams. a suspect fled with cash and medicines, from Mount Eagles Pharmacy, dunmurry, but left empty handed from timoney chemist, in Moss road, lisburn. thankfully nobody was hurt.

Sadly, there are all too many incidents like these, across the UK - and hundreds of burglaries too – and they serve as a timely reminder to pharmacy teams that they can never be too careful when it comes to security. the police and the authorities take these type of attacks extremely seriously, just as the nPa does. a superintendent update, published on april 26, looks at what pharmacies can do to enhance their security, but nPa staff are always available to talk to. colleagues in the insurance and professional indemnity teams are available on 01727 858687, as is the communications team, who can advise on handling the media interest that often surrounds these types of issues.

PharMacy In focUS aWardS on to more happier news. the Ulster chemists’ association's eleventh annual Pharmacy in focus awards once again celebrated the achievements of the profession. there was a tremendous range of innovative projects showcased during the event, which reflects the contribution that local pharmacy makes to healthcare in northern Ireland on a daily basis. the full list of winners appears elsewhere in this magazine, but we would especially like to congratulate rebecca adair of Medicare Pharmacy who won the nPa-sponsored health Promotion award.

Judges of this highly competitive category were impressed by a health promotion project rebecca delivered in conjunction with local charity Brain Injury Matters, and which was designed to help raise the awareness of the common health issues that affect people with brain injuries; specifically those issues which affect both carers and the wider community. We wish the project - and rebecca - continued success.

nPa MUr gUIdancE finally, contractors are being reminded to read up on the nPa’s guidance on how to make the MUr service to work for them after cPnI said that only 32 per cent of the available 2016/17 funding had been claimed. In addition to general nPa guidance on MUrs, specific guidance for respiratory patients and patients with diabetes is also available. respiratory patients remain the largest eligibility group who benefit from the MUr service, but research shows that many people with diabetes do not actually take their prescribed medication. the MUr service enables community pharmacists to use their skills effectively, by giving patients with long-term health conditions the opportunity to discuss their medicines, so that they are better informed to manage their condition.

healthcare is better…connected!

Members of the Connected Community Care Service steering group, which has driven the initiative through the implementation stage.

collaboration between healthcare professionals is always mooted as ‘the way forward’ for nI healthcare. now, a fantastic new initiative has been launched to drive the concept of collaboration even further.

the connected community care Service is an innovative initiative, which is being implemented in Belfast by the Integrated care Partnerships and is an example of a new approach in developing a model for co- production and coordinating relationships between health and social care and local communities; a concept which was the cornerstone of the health and Wellbeing 2026: delivering together document.

the service demonstrates the potential of multi-agency partners to develop and deliver an approach to

integrated care at scale, prioritising early intervention and prevention and enabling people to lead long, healthy and active lives, with care and support provided closer to home. one of the aims of the service is to find better ways of working to ensure a more joined up and coordinated approach in the use of community assets in Belfast, including local community and voluntary groups to deliver the best outcomes for people accessing services.

the coordination function of the service is to provide a single point of access through which gPs and trust community teams can provide people with access to support and services within their local communities with an assurance of the quality of the interventions and the evaluation of the outcomes.
