WINNER: BRONAGH WARD, MCDONALDS, CASTLE HEALTHCARE, BELFAST

Bronagh Ward, McDonalds, Castle Healthcare, Rebecca Cabrejas, Generics Business Manager, Accord Healthcare and Cliff McElhinney, UCA President

M

cdonalds Pharmacy is situated in one of Belfast’s most notorious flashpoint areas: the bottom of the castlereagh road in

East Belfast. the fact that the area is underprivileged means that many of the participants experience a wide range of issues – from poverty and mental health issues, to lifestyle problems.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, isolation in such areas is a major issue - particularly among the elderly. as the local pharmacist, seeing patients on a daily basis, Bronagh knew that many people had no family around them and, for that reason, the morale in the area was low.

In order to try and help these local residents, Bronagh contacted the Short Strand community forum: a group, which was established with the prime objective of relieving poverty and sickness in

the area and providing facilities to improve conditions for the local residents, and, thanks to the support of Building community Pharmacy Partnership, Bronagh was able to establish a project in conjunction with the forum.

Bronagh was introduced to a local volunteer, Bernie Mcconnell, who was to prove instrumental in providing leads for her, since she regularly visited older adults in the area to provide support to them. as a result, Bernie knew about the various health issues that were prevalent in the area and she was able to inform Bronagh about the health needs of the community. the project therefore focused on addressing issues such as isolation, mental health, diet and nutrition, exercise and minor ailments, and provided the participants with links to other healthcare professionals.

Bronagh Ward, Castle Healthcare ‘I think that this award will show our local community that we don’t just provide medicines. It’s a way of demonstrating how we can connect with our local patients to provide a wide range of other services.’

Rebecca Cabrejas, Accord Healthcare ‘accord are very honoured to support this award, particularly since it allies patients with their local community pharmacy. It’s a 'win-win' situation for everyone involved.’
