UCA CHARITY PARTNERSHIP Addiction NI

In 2018, Uca will be working with addiction nI to help support the work this charity is doing in our communities. We will also be raising awareness of how addiction can affect anyone is society and help community pharmacies to support people and their families.

Want to know more about addiction nI and the work they do? Start by visiting their website www.addictionni.com for information and contact details .

through our Uca local meetings we will upskill pharmacists on addiction, signs to look out for and ways to respond – look out for details of upcoming events in your area.

addiction nI delivers on a number of programmes and is part of the UK-wide drink Wise age Well project. the 5-year project aims to help people make healthier choices about alcohol as they age. there are concerns that support services are skewed towards the younger age groups and whilst there are improvements made in this age range, older members of society are now experiencing a growing incidence of problematic drinking. drink Wise age Well aims to help individuals, families and employers to support over-50s to maintain a healthy relationship with alcohol.

a major study for drink Wise, age Well found that of those aged 50 plus who said they were drinking more now than in the past, 40% said it was due to retirement and 26% to bereavement. other cited reasons include loss of purpose, fewer opportunities to socialise and a change in financial circumstances.

the drink Wise age Well programme offers a range of of tailored and confidential support for individuals, families and anyone supporting those 50+ and recognising alcohol may be having an impact on their quality of life which can be delivered in the home or venues to suit. there are a range of online resources such as guides including ‘family, friends and carers’ which offers practical tips to help loved ones who are drinking (via www.drinkwiseagewell.org.uk).

the programme also hopes to engage with employees and jobseekers aged over 50 to raise their own understanding of the impact of alcohol use, offering a package of support to employers, employees, job seeking organisations and employee well-being organisations which include: • pre-retirement awareness sessions focusing on resilience and healthy ageing • direct access support for employees aged over 50 in the demonstration areas who want support in relation to their alcohol use

• training on alcohol awareness for staff, employers and employee reps • contributions to newsletters and providing fact sheets on alcohol and healthy ageing

Employers can download their Workplace guide and drinkWiseageWell can also deliver a six-session modular group programme called live Wise, age Well .this can be delivered in workplaces or community settings providing practical tips and advice.
