PHARMACIST OF THE YEAR

WINNER: ANNA MCLAUGHLIN, THORNTONS MEDICARE, NEWCASTLE

Colm Magee, Director or Sales, Teva UK and Anna McLaughlin, Medicare Pharmacy

a

nna has worked in community pharmacy for fifteen years and has a successful history of delivering patient-focused services,

which improve the health and wellbeing of the patients in the local area.

anna constantly strives to enhance these services and to focus on prevention, earlier interventions and integrated care.

She is always promoting the open-door aspect of pharmacy and reaches out to people who do not see healthcare professionals regularly. She has formed links with all of the local health-related groups, such as age concern and arthritis care and signposts patients to them where suitable. anna also feels a responsibility to do her bit to manage the estimated £18 million that is wasted

on medicines each year in northern Ireland. She plays her part in preventing this wastage by reviewing medication at every opportunity, and by addressing over-ordering with patients.

the pharmacy provides a nursing home service and anna works alongside the staff nurses, communicating with them on a daily basis. She reviews medications, reconciles medicines and liaises with the practice pharmacist to resolve issues with stock.

to assist in keeping patients in their own homes, anna has pioneered a collection and delivery service. She manages hospital admissions and discharges, and liaises with the hospital to get the patient home as soon as possible by offering an efficient delivery of updated medication.

Anna McLaughlin, Thorntons Medicare, Newcastle ‘I hope this award makes people realise what the pharmacy can do for them. the ‘open door’ aspect of pharmacy needs to be more widely recognised and patients need to know that we’re not just there for dispensing medicines. anyone who becomes a pharmacist does so to help people and this award is just an appreciation for what we do every day.’

Colm Magee, Teva UK ‘teva are the largest medicines supplier in the world and we are full of admiration and respect for pharmacists, who dispense our products each day. It’s a ‘win-win’ for us to just be here and be part of this great celebration of pharmacy.’
