ith more than 20 years’ experience at Boots Ballymena health centre, Bernie’s role is one which allows her to
demonstrate her versatility and flexibility on a daily basis. She faces regular challenges in this busy pharmacy; challenges, which can range from securing stock for a patient who desperately needs medication, to dealing with anxious carers, to supporting vulnerable supervision patients and even to just providing a smile to someone who needs a listening ear.
Most recently she was able to help a customer, who was having some ongoing mental health issues, to receive the immediate assistance of the gPs in the health centre after she suffered a breakdown in the pharmacy. Bernie's quick thinking and professional care helped to calm the
patient down before ensuring that she was admitted for further care. this is just one of many instances where Bernie has attended to the local community to provide a level of healthcare above and beyond the ‘call of duty’ to ensure that the most vulnerable do not go unattended.
‘Bernie is an excellent team member ,’ says one of her colleagues, ‘with a very positive influence on the rest of the team, even in stressful situations. She never flinches. She can think on her feet, and she doesn't complain when faced with challenges. She just rolls up her sleeves and gets to work with a ‘can do’ attitude.’
Bernie Watt, Boots Ballymena ‘I’m delighted for myself but, more importantly, the team, who are absolutely delighted. and as for the patients – there are no words to describe how much they’re always behind us with their support, so they’ll be overwhelmed with this award coming to our pharmacy!’
Lynda Magee, Water Wipes ‘It’s so important for community pharmacy to show the work that it can do on a day-to-day basis. the over-the-counter experience is second to none and these awards are a great way to reward the contribution that people like Bernie make to their community.’
