OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO PHARMACY

WINNER: SHEELIN MCKEAGNEY FPSNI

Sheelin McKeagney, Outstanding Contribution to Pharmacy recipient

t

his accolade is awarded each year to a pharmacy professional, who has made a significant contribution not only to pharmacy,

but to the wider healthcare profession in northern Ireland. this year’s recipient, Sheelin McKeagney, has met all of the criteria – and more. Sheelin began his pharmacy career by working in the family business during school holidays. after graduating from liverpool School of Pharmacy, he return to northern Ireland for his pre-registration year and, by 1995, had taken over the reins of the family business following his father’s untimely death. the family business thrived under Sheelin’s direction, but he also took the pharmacies in a different direction by involving them heavily in community-based healthcare projects, and in local engagement through Building community Pharmacy Partnership.

Sheelin hasn’t simply involved himself in the day-to- day running of pharmacies, however. he has also dedicated his career to getting involved in the development of pharmacy as a profession and, as such, has made a significant contribution to the promotion and progression of pharmacy within the health sector. a fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society, he is a leader for the whole pharmacy profession and has previously served on the Executive committee of Ulster chemists’ association and as chairman of community Pharmacy northern Ireland. he is also busy in the national arena, currently active on the UK Pharmacy rebalancing Board representing community pharmacy.

Sheelin McKeagney ‘to be honest, I’m completely flabbergasted by this. I certainly wasn’t expecting to hear my name called and am extremely proud and pleased. I’m particularly proud because, during the awards ceremony, I had looked around the room and realised I was among so many superb professionals, who give so much to their local communities. to be standing before them, receiving this accolade, has made me even more proud of both my pharmacy colleagues and my profession.’

Brendan Moffatt, EMIS Health ‘these awards are the absolute pinnacle for the year for EMIS and to be involved, as Sheelin said, with such talented people in the room. EMIS health look forward to this every year – and every year we come back. It is an amazing night!’ www.pharmacyinfocus.co.uk/awards
