he annual Pharmacy in focus awards are not only a fantastic way of rewarding what can be
accomplished by our primary care professionals, but also provide a platform for diverse and life changing projects; an evening where pharmacy professionals are recognised by their peers and where everyone has the opportunity to network and discuss new ways forward.
as such, the awards – and the Uca President’s Ball – are always the main event in the pharmacy calendar but, even by our standards, we have to admit that this year’s event was a real winner!
the new venue – the iconic titanic Belfast – provided a dramatic backdrop to the evening, while this year’s presenter, the equally iconic Eamonn holmes, took the event to new heights!
Ever the consummate professional, Eamonn seamlessly compèred the event despite being ill and actually participated in a hilarious ‘double act’

with dr terry Maguire, who opened proceedings by declaring that, in light of the fact that Eamonn was ill, he himself would be Mcing the event. Most of the people in the room actually believed the redoubtable dr Maguire until Eamonn appeared at the top of the titanic staircase and took his rightful place on the stage!
the audience, which included some of the sector’s most influential figures, including nPa chairman, Ian Strachan and chief Pharmacist leyla hannbeck , as well as various dignitaries including Mlas Paula Bradshaw and colm gildernew then settled down for an evening of celebration and recognition of the great work that’s being done across northern Ireland.
of course, the event would not have been possible without the support of our wonderful sponsors, many of whom have provided consistent and highly-valued sponsorship for a number of years now to the Ulster chemists’ association.
consistently helped us to recognise the strengths of the province’s community pharmacy and we thank them for that.
We’d also like to thank this year’s category sponsors: Mclernon computers, teva UK, EMIS health, Water Wipes, gSK consumer healthcare, KISS cosmetics, alliance healthcare, Sangers aah, accord healthcare, PcM associates and the national Pharmacy association. associated sponsorship is also provided this year by fujifilm, active Iron and cambrian alliance and we would like to convey our appreciation for your ongoing support.
despite the fact that the awards are now in their eleventh year, we continue to be totally amazed by the standard of the applications and nominations. and we’re not alone. once again, this year’s judging panel said that the quality of the applications had once again risen; proof, if any more was needed, that
the province’s community pharmacists continue to up their game through a wide range of initiatives and projects which, without these awards, would go unsung.
the evening’s proceedings began, as always, with a speech by Uca President, cliff McElhinney, who gave a wide-ranging overview of the last year in community pharmacy.
cliff began by referring to last year’s speech in which he asked for pharmacists’ help in highlighting the imbalance between professional regulation and criminal law; an imbalance that ultimately led to a pharmacist being criminally liable for an inadvertent dispensing error.
‘I am delighted to report,’ cliff said, ‘that parliament has now approved new legislation around a new defence against inadvertent dispensing errors. the pharmacy preparation and dispensing errors in registered pharmacies order 2018 is expected to come into effect this year in great Britain.’
