EHEALTH & INNOVATION IN PHARMACY PRACTICE

WINNER: OTC CONSULT, BELFAST

Keith McLernon, Managing Director, McLernon Computers, Lezley-Anne Hanna and Maurice Hall, OTC Consult

o

tc consult (lezley-anne hanna and Maurice hall) picked up the ehealth & Innovation in Pharmacy Practice award for

their innovative app, which provides quick access to more than 70 self-treatable conditions that are managed in community pharmacy practice. the judges were particularly impressed by the fact that the app was developed by the team despite the fact that they had no previous experience in this field!

recent research had revealed that pharmacists did not recommend certain deregulations due to a lack of knowledge, preferring instead to refer patients to the gP. this app addresses this issue, enabling sales of such products, while simultaneously facilitating the provision of best practice advice. as a result, satisfied patients are likely to return to the pharmacy in the future, thus increasing footfall.

30 - PharMacy In focUS

the app already has a five-star rating on google Play and apple stores and has received excellent user reviews, such as:

‘a really useful app for community pharmacy which is easy to navigate and it’s great that it's so up to date. have already used it with our technicians in a training session...’

‘Such a useful tool and so easy to navigate around. It’s great having detailed information about all the main otc categories at my fingertips…a super app, which is very focussed on supporting pharmacists and the pharmacy team to provide evidence-based and complete patient care.’

Maurice Hall, OTC Consult ‘I think these awards are a brilliant showcase for what community pharmacy does. We are so honoured to get this award for the small contribution that we have made to helping community pharmacists to do what they do so well.’

Keith McLernon, McLernon Computers ‘I think community pharmacists are the unsung heroes of healthcare, but they don’t get the recognition that they deserve. Events such as the Pharmacy in focus awards are a great way to recognise their contribution. this is the eleventh year we’ve been involved and you only need to see the number of people here in this great setting to realise how much people appreciate this event.’
