supported by AWARDS PHARMACY HERO

WINNER: PAUL MCDONAGH & PETER WRIGHT, MCDONAGH’S PHARMACY, BELFAST

Peter Wright, Stuart Hutchison, Northern Ireland Business Manager, GSK Consumer Healthcare and Paul McDonagh, McDonaghs Pharmacy

E

very day, pharmacists in northern Ireland do their very best to support every patient who walks through their doors. this year’s

Pharmacy hero award, however, goes to two pharmacists, who went through a traumatic experience as a result of someone who came through their door for all the wrong reasons. on friday 6 april last year, Paul Mcdonagh and Peter Wright were attacked in Paul’s pharmacy. Both suffered stab wounds but they managed to subdue the attacker until the police arrived. Both were admitted to hospital and were thankfully stitched up and discharged later that day.

It is the response of the two men to this dreadful incident that sees them awarded this accolade this evening. not only were they both back in the pharmacy the following day, but Paul decided to

use the experience to try to help other pharmacists. to begin with, he decided to publicise what had happened with an in-depth television interview, which had the impact of ensuring that the issue of drug misuse and the vulnerability of pharmacists and their staff was brought to the attention of not only the public, but also various agencies, such as the department of health and the Police Service of northern Ireland. Paul and Peter’s experience has raised awareness of the issues faced by pharmacies every day and was the catalyst for the relaunch of the zero tolerance campaign and a commitment to improve support for pharmacies to tackle violence and abuse.

Paul McDonagh, McDonagh’s Pharmacy ‘on behalf of Peter and myself, I’d just like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to those, who have given us this

award. I’d also like to thank our staff, our families and all those from the Uca, cPnI, PSnI and Pharmacy forum, who offered their support and gave it willingly. our customers were fantastic throughout and I’d like to thank those of you who have approached Peter and me this evening to offer their best wishes. It means a lot to us, so thank you.’

Stuart Hutchison, GSK Consumer Healthcare ‘at gSK, our purpose is to help people ‘do more, feel better and live longer’ and by supporting this event and sponsoring the Pharmacy hero award we are rewarding the people at the forefront who do that. It’s key that pharmacies in nI recognise that gSK are here to support the stores and the staff.’ www.pharmacyinfocus.co.uk/awards
