how to mAKE REtAIl SpAcE woRK hARDER by Anna Macaulay

In pharmacy retail, the idea is to create a shopping environment that is easy to navigate, uncluttered, clean and exciting. the customer’s perception of the service they will receive via otc and pharmacy is influenced by their initial findings on entering the store.

the retail space within the pharmacy is a chance to build trust and share knowledge via imaging, merchandising techniques, brands and pricing

gEt thE fRoNt-of-StoRE ImAgE RIght Shoppers will leave out aisles or bays that they perceive to be cluttered and difficult to navigate. this perception begins at the pharmacy window. Keep it simple with not too many messages.

If you have a lot of window display space, consider using branded de- cals. Be careful of what items you decide to place in the window.

pRomotIoNAl DISplAYS these can be located mid-aisle, on a gondola end or as a freestanding shipper display. (try not to put product directly on to the floor as it can be easily damaged.)

Use promotional displays to distract the customers who have just come in to drop in a prescription. the idea is get these customers to browse.

SmARt mERchANDISINg most consumers will take at least six or seven steps into a small store before they notice their surroundings.

this means any merchandisable space by the front door will be missed. Keep it interesting so your customers notice it whilst they are waiting to collect their prescriptions.

StocK lEVElS the optimum number of retail lines stocked is 2,500 and yet, in a recent survey by Numark, the

Anna Macaulay, owner of 'The Savvy Retailer'

majority of independent pharmacies stock around 6,000.

customers will be overwhelmed and will struggle to navigate the sales floor, while you will have cash tied up in unsold lines and a back area full of back stock. Now is the time to take stock and make cuts. create a reduce-to-clear

section and use sales data to discontinue lines.

pRIcINg pharmacies can afford to charge a small premium as many are seen as places of convenience, but be careful that you don’t out price your products. check local competition for pricing.
