HEALTH PROMOTION AWARD FINALISTS
Caroline Bustard Boots Ballymena
Three years ago, pharmacist Caroline Bustard was working as a locum at a pharmacy in the town’s Harryville area. The Hope Centre, which is located just beside the pharmacy, was, at that time, the ‘go to’ place for more than 40 recovering addicts, many of whom were in their mid 60s. The centre initially asked Caroline to come along and do a talk on OTC prescription abuse and disposal, but it was so successful that she became involved in a very successful project that helped those affected by health issues.
Rebecca Adair Medicare Pharmacy, Dundonald
Northern Ireland has the highest rate of acquired brain injury (ABI) in the UK. Rebecca partnered with local Belfast charity Brain Injury Matters (BIM) to deliver a project designed to address the ‘taboo’ of mental health in patients suffering from ABI, and looked at issues such as isolation, loss of social role and lack of meaningful purpose. The planned programme involved monthly sessions, which allowed Rebecca to present and to invite outside speakers, who addressed a range of subjects.
Judith Dowey Anderson’s Pharmacy, Portadown
Pharmacist Judith Dowey and her team were keen to address the health issues that they witnessed affecting young people in the area. As a result, Judith initiated and facilitated a six-week project, ‘Soccercise’, which focused on a core group of young, local male teenagers. The project, which was run in conjunction with the Sports Council and the Police Service of Northern Ireland, proved to be a great example of collaborative working in the community.
