EHEALTH AND INNOVATION IN PHARMACY PRACTICE FINALISTS

Lezley-Anne Hanna and Maurice Hall OTC Consult

In 2016, the team secured £3500 of funding to develop and launch a mobile phone app for pharmacists and pharmacy staff to support over-the-counter (OTC) consultations. The majority of self-treatable conditions listed in the app include pharmacological management with OTC medicines. Research conducted by one of the authors revealed that pharmacists did not recommend certain deregulations due to a lack of knowledge (but preferred to refer patients to the GP). The app addresses this issue, enabling sales of such products and ensuring that satisfied patients return to the pharmacy, thus increasing footfall.

Maghaberry Pharmacy Maghaberry

Maghaberry Pharmacy is the first in Ireland to have invested in CDsmart, an electronic CD recording system and is probably the only pharmacy in Northern Ireland to fully become paperless. All necessary pharmacy records are in one place, and are easily accessible and paper free. Patient care is improved because the records are quick and easy to enter and can be quickly accessed if there are any queries. Counter sales increased by 17 per cent in the first month of operation: an increase which can be attributed to the availability of the pharmacist at the counter, promoting services.

McGettigans Chemist Belfast

McGettigan’s embraced the ‘PillPacPlus’ robotic technology system as the team knew that it needed an improved system to ensure its high risk patients are supported to take their medicines. With PillPacPlus, the patients’ medicines are checked for appropriateness and then entered into the system. The robot then generates the medication in easy-to-use sachets in line with the patient’s treatment plans. This simple innovation makes life easier for the patients who need support in taking their medicines and the trail of empty packets means there is never any doubt about missed doses.
