COMMUNITY PHARMACY SERVICE INITIATIVE FINALISTS

Sinead Bond Boots, Coleraine

Two years ago, Sinead was asked if she would be interested in providing a voluntary, one- off talk to people with learning difficulties. Sinead was so taken with the outcome of the talk that she ran a one-year project for men and women, who were spoken to both separately and together in a bid to encourage them to take responsibility for their own health. A wide range of issues was covered during the project encompassing both physical and emotional issues.

Boots Donegall Place, Belfast

Clarissa McSorley and her team were aware of the lack of accessible provision of innovative services, such as human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination and meningitis B vaccination in the community, and so they decided to extend their healthcare offering and develop their location in Donegall Place into an accessible pharmacy services centre within a heavily condensed locality in the Belfast area. The feedback form patients indicates the positive impact the new service provision has had on patients.

Emer Geoghegan Cullyhanna Pharmacy, Cullyhanna

Emer secured funding to run a project for men in the local area in a bid to tackle the health issues that may have been affecting them, but about which they were reluctant to speak. As a result, many of the men now attend the pharmacy regularly and ask for Emer by name, so there is no doubt that the project has been invaluable in highlighting the pharmacy as a ‘hub’ for local healthcare.

Bronagh Laverty-Ward Castle Healthcare, McDonalds, Belfast

Bronagh designed a project which focused on working with older people, addressing issues surrounding isolation, mental health, diet and nutrition, exercise and minor ailments. Following the project, she observed a marked increase in morale among the participants and the questionnaires that each client filled in clearly showed this to be true. When it came to feedback, every client said that they had experienced health gains and had increased their knowledge of both medication and health issues, such as winter health.
