Driving illegally with bad vision
Around a million people with poor eyesight could be driving illegally on Britain’s roads.
The report from the Association of Optometrists (AOP) found that 35 per cent of practitioners had seen a patient within the previous month whose vision was below the legal standard but still drives despite being advised not to. With more than 32 million cars on Britain’s roads and 46 million qualified drivers, there are fears many more could be putting themselves and others at risk. It’s no wonder over half of drivers agree with expert opinion and
think all motorists should be legally required to have regular eye tests. Without the correct prescription, motorists may have trouble judging distance, depth and could miss cars, cyclists and pedestrians in their wider field.
Drivers with an eye condition should always notify their insurer to ensure they are covered should they need to make a claim. Britain has some of the most relaxed vision requirements for drivers in Europe.
But with experts urging drivers to have an eye test every ten years, maybe it’s time to take this issue more seriously.
