PETS
A respectful goodbye for your pet
Having a pet can bless you with the happiest days of your lives – and ultimately, the worst.
When your furry friend becomes a cherished memory, Old Flatts Farm Pet Crematorium is there to sympathetically support you through the difficult and distressing time of losing your family pet.
malamute suddenly three years ago, Chris felt somewhat detached and a little let down by the service he received, handed back his dog’s ashes in a cardboard box wrapped in a plastic bag after waiting two weeks.
Based in Treeton at their idyllic family home, Old Flatts Farm has recently been opened by animal lover, Chris Beckett, who wanted to offer a caring and compassionate cremation service for pet owners. A focal part of the community, the farm has been in his wife Victoria’s family for over 200 years, with the couple looking at ways to keep the long-standing, animal orientated happenings going for future generations.
After losing his beloved Alaskan
Chris was shocked by the process he later uncovered, learning pets are often frozen and shipped out of town en masse for communal cremations. After a long wait for their pet’s remains to be returned, owners have often had no real choice or input in the process. Sometimes we are under the illusion that the veterinary route is the only one; however, we do have a choice of what happens after our pets are put to sleep or pass away. With pets having become a staple part of many families, Old Flatts Farm offers a service enshrined in the same dignity, care and respect that you would expect from human cremations. Based in the farm’s old milking
parlour, the crematorium is homely and open; the sandstone barn has been renovated using rustic materials found on the farm such as horse tack from when shire horses
ploughed the field.
Chris offers a collection service from your home or the vets where he will collect your pet in their basket and blankets in his specially designed van where pets are then cooled to appear sleeping. Understanding how emotionally hard losing a pet can be, the private chapel of rest means you can spend as much time as your family needs to say goodbye. While Chris is discreet as you grieve, he is also there for support if necessary, with many owners sharing stories and photographs over copious amounts of tea. With open grounds surrounding the farm, Chris welcomes his guests to take some time to walk and think; feed the chickens and turkeys that are roaming free, stroke the many cats, meet the farm’s donkey and say hello to Chris’ own dogs, Nala and Reuben.
Offering a personal service, you can be comfortable in the knowledge that you will receive 100 per cent of your pet’s ashes within 72 hours; with no plastic bags in sight, these will arrive in a scatter tube or bamboo pouch with a pack
of forget-me-not seeds to plant along with a handwritten card from Chris. You can also choose from their variety of memorials such as caskets and urns or even cast iron dogs and cats.
Sharing the same beliefs, Chris is also working with local, family- owned veterinary practices to be their preferred crematorium. Pets make a house whole. While losing your best friend means there will be no happy face, no wagging tail or purring affection to greet you when you get home, Old Flatts Farm is there to thank them for the unconditional love they had and the paw prints they have left on your heart.
