OUT AND ABOUT

Onwards and Upwards for Dearne Valley Ramblers

If you’re looking to start a new hobby this year then why not consider joining one of our local Ramblers groups.

This proved to be the turning point, with new faces being attracted to joining the group, all willing to devote their time and effort into ensuring that the group continued. With an extensive walking programme, Dearne

Valley Ramblers enjoy varied settings for their weekly walks, passing through everything from Wath and Wentworth to parts of Derbyshire and Sheffield.

Their routes also extend to most parts of

Along with getting out into the fresh air and discovering the beauty of our local area while enjoying some gentle exercise, joining The Ramblers is also a great social pastime where you can meet likeminded people.

Despite a national and local fall in membership numbers of The Ramblers in recent years, the Dearne Valley Group has bucked the trend with an increase in annual membership from 2016 to 2017.

Based in the Dearne, but with a widespread membership base, Dearne Valley Ramblers are the only group of the nine South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire Ramblers clubs to see an increase in membership. But Dearne Valley Ramblers chairman, Nigel Hebden, says this didn’t happen overnight. “A few years ago we were struggling with a shortage of walk leaders and committee members as age and infirmity had taken its toll. We took the decision - quite rare amongst Rambler’s groups at that time - to welcome dog owners, together with their dogs on our walks, and we also launched ourselves onto the internet.”

Yorkshire and beyond, with recent outings including a walk along the Flamborough coastline and a coach trip to York Christmas market. In 2016, the group celebrated its 20th anniversary, marking the milestone with a number of events including walking the entire length in stages of the 98 mile South Yorkshire Trail, as well as a summer barbeque and a book of members’ recipes.

And last year, they joined Rotherham Metro Ramblers to revive the Rotherham Walking Festival which saw 500 walkers enjoying eight walks over a five day period during October. The group walks on Sundays throughout the year and Wednesday evenings during the summer months, along with occasional offerings on other days. During the winter, a monthly Wednesday morning walk is planned.

Nigel says that it is down to the hard work of the management committee that the group continues to thrive.

“Everyone involved, from secretary to walks coordinator, work together for the greater benefit of the group. Promotion is also fundamentally important and we are very lucky to have both social media and press liaison personnel who have been invaluably supported by our friends in the press and media in recent years.” While you’re building new skills and knowledge in navigating the routes, taking in the nature along

On your marks...

Get set to lace up your running shoes this May as Rotherham hosts its first ever 10K race through the town.

The brainwave of inspirational marathon man, Ray Matthews, whose incredible feat saw him complete 75 marathons in 75 days in 2016, the Pawson Rotherham 10k and Fun Run will be taking place on Sunday 6th May as hundreds of runners descend on Rotherham to make their mark on the inaugural race. Following on from last year’s Love Later Life Run which raised over £1,000 for Age UK Rotherham, the Pawson 10K will once again raise money for the charity which helps older people have enjoyable and fulfilling lives. Now 76, Ray is a

beacon for older people in our area to prove that you are never too old to achieve what you set out to do. The race is sponsored by Pawson

Transport, a local family distribution company who have been trading in Rotherham since 1921. Along with the Pawson family, Ray and Age UK, the race is also heavily supported by local running clubs and Rotherham Council. Ray is hoping that famous and professional athletes will take to the starting line to compete with grass roots runners looking to set a personal best.

Starting at Clifton Park, the route will take runners down to the pedestrianised areas of the town, out along Centenary Way towards Canklow before returning

to Rotherham Minster. It will then pass back through the town towards Doncaster Gate and the park, before heading up to Herringthorpe Stadium and back towards Clifton. For those not yet ready to tackle

the 10K, there will also be a fun run in Clifton Park where Ray hopes every local school will enter a team of 10 runners to coincide with his mission to get every child in Rotherham running one mile a day at school.

Early entry is now open with thanks to Rotherham Harriers, with entry fees set at £14 for the 10K and £4 for the fun run, with discounts for UK registered runners.
