In the 24 years that we’ve been fostering in Rotherham, we’ve had over 100 looked after children and young people come to live with us on different placements.
Many of the children had learning or physical disabilities ranging from foetal alcohol syndrome to global development delay.
While we have 5 children of our own, we’d had no previous experience of children with additional needs and were never going to know everything about each different condition.
The support we’ve received has been second to none; we’ve happily undertaken any training necessary, Maria even went to night school to learn sign language to communicate with a deaf child who came to us.
It’s been exciting to share new experiences with the children, especially those everyday moments we take for granted like seeing Christmas lights or going on pony rides.”
