To compete with the compact crossovers such as the Duster, Kuga and X-Trail, Vauxhall have recently given their smallest model, the Viva, an SUV makeover with the exciting Viva Rocks which is on offer at £11,530. The Vauxhall Viva was never a car that thrilled me, especially the ‘E’ version which they struggled to sell. It was a model that Vauxhall’s PR men had constantly on offer to testers.
Early last year the company reintroduced the Viva as a city car which carried the family look and has proved popular with buyers. It was then given a tougher look with the new Rocks.
The rugged-looking road car has features usually found on large SUV versions like increased ride height that gives better visibility and more comfort in country lanes and over potholes. The Viva Rocks is an eye-catcher in city or
country. It has the same practicality of the fivedoor saloon in the family, with five seats and rear seats that can be folded to give luggage space of 1,000 litres and a package that has compact dimensions.
For those who fancy a Land Rover-type that performs well on the road, the Rocks goes part of the way with roof rails, tough-looking front with fog lights, rear bumpers with integrated skidpads and 15-inch alloy wheels.
Inside there are touches of luxury and smart fascia plus driver’s seat height adjuster and air conditioning. It also has electric front windows, cruise control, power steering with a city mode and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. Power comes from a 1.0i 75bhp petrol unit that will give 0-62mph in 13 seconds, a top speed of 105.6mph and combined consumption of 60mpg. If you love the Viva, the Rocks version will put a thrill into your driving.
