The Christmas holidays are rapidly approaching and our work in the garden grinds to a halt, either due to the cold, the wet, or lack of daylight - or simply because we are busy with friends and family over the festive period.

December, is the time to sow onion seed and tradition is that sowing is done on Boxing Day. The sowing of seed is an important part of any gardener’s year and getting it right, can make a huge difference to the impact of floral displays and size and yield of vegetable crops. Many of us just buy one type of compost and do not buy a seed compost. Seed composts have less available nutrient in the compost as seeds rely on the stored nutrient in the seed to germinate. Seeds and newly-emerged plants only need a little food to grow initially and will form a bigger and stronger root structure if they must hunt for what food is available.

The smaller the seed, the harder it is to get an even distribution when sowing. It is often easier to mix very fine seed with silver sand and then sow, so that even distribution can be

attained. The question of when to water seeds is often asked. Watering the levelled and slightly firmed compost before sowing is preferred, so that fine seeds are not washed into hollows or splashed out of the tray. Further watering is best done by immersing trays in water and then allowing the tray to drain. This prevents waterlogging and damping off. Avoid allowing newly-emerged seedlings to get wet leaves, as on a sunny day the tender leaves could suffer from scorching.

Always read the instructions on the packet and in this area of the UK, sow the seeds towards the end of the period recommended. If the instructions say, ‘put the newly planted seeds in the fridge’ or ‘do not cover the seeds’ this is because this is the way the seeds germinate in nature and you will get better results if you stick to the instructions.

We wish everyone a Happy Christmas and Good Gardening New Year.

We do not meet in December and the January meeting will be our Annual General Meeting and the time for subscriptions to be paid. Membership is £5.00 per annum per household. Our next meeting will be on 30th January, at The Swan Inn on Kirkgate at 7.15pm for 7.30pm.
