Fuel poverty is one of the hidden issues of our rural county, which greatly affects the health and wellbeing of those who cannot heat their homes.
Across Cumbria, more than 28,000 households, or 1 in 10, are living in fuel poverty, having to make the harsh choice between eating and heating.
In a bad winter, an extra 300 people in our county will lose their lives to the effects of the plummeting temperatures. It’s easy to become complacent about the numbers and not think about what they mean. Cumbria Community Foundation created this photograph, to illustrate that each person matters. We hope that bringing the slippers together for this photograph, makes you realise just how many
Cumbrians we lose unnecessarily.
The Winter Warmth Appeal was launched in 2010 and works with Age UK, to make a real difference to hundreds of people each year. For many Cumbrians who live in fuel poverty, the start of the cold weather will mark a period of extreme hardship and very tough decisions.
We need to help change the fact that people are dying in our county because they can’t afford to keep themselves warm in winter. If you would like to donate to the appeal, visit
www.cumbriafoundation.org/winter-warmth- fund, send a cheque to Cumbria Community Foundation, Dovenby Hall, Cockermouth, CA13 0PN or telephone 01900 825760.
