The Artington String Quartet gets its name from the fact that all four musicians live within 5 miles of Artington, which lies between Guildford and Godalming in Surrey. In this programme, they play music by 19th and 20th century composers, including the 2nd string quartet by the Russian composer Alexander Borodin.

The 1950s musical ‘Kismet’ (Fate) drew on the melodies of Borodin bringing his music to a wider audience. His Polovetsian Dances from his incomplete opera ‘Prince Igor’ contributed the melody for ‘Stranger in Paradise’. Two of the themes in the 2nd string quartet were used; they provide the basis of the songs, ‘Baubles, Bangles and Beads’ as well as ‘And this is my Beloved’. Borodin wrote the quartet in 1881 and dedicated it to his wife Ekaterina Protopopova, a pianist. He died in 1887. In 1954 ‘Kismet’ won a Tony Award for best Broadway musical with Borodin receiving a posthumous award for the music. History does not record whether his estate got any royalties.

Borodin’s day job was as professor at the St. Petersburg Academy of Medicine and he was very popular with his students. Composing was a hobby. He said: “As a composer seeking to remain anonymous, I am shy of confessing my musical activity... For others it is their chief business, the occupation and aim of life. For me it is a relaxation, a pastime which distracts me from my principal business, my professorship.”
