Air Museum’s 50th anniversary celebrations at Coventry Airport, with a new temporary exhibition officially opened by the Mayor of Coventry. One of the UK’s first independent aviation museums and with various Brooklands- related exhibits on display including a Vickers Viscount, this is well worth a visit.

On 31st August I joined the Byfleet Heritage Society for a special ceremony at St Mary’s Church in Byfleet to commemorate the lives of two notable local residents who were both killed in flying accidents just six days apart in 1917 and were both buried in the churchyard. One was 22-year-old Lt Arthur Roberts MC who died on a training flight in a Martinsyde Elephant serving with the Royal Flying Corps at Hounslow Heath and the other was the notable Scottish aviation pioneer and 38-year-old Vickers flying instructor Harold Barnwell who died as the company’s chief test pilot when testing the prototype Vickers FB26 Vampire at Joyce Green in Kent. Wreaths were laid on both of these graves followed by a symbolic fly-past performed by local resident and Brooklands Trust Member Ian Whittle in a Piper Archer from nearby Fairoaks Airport.
