CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

document, and it has been agreed with both the Museum and Trustees, we will present it to the membership, either at the next AGM or possibly an EGM. The primary objective behind the revision has been to simplify the existing text, which was drafted against the back- ground of the proposed merger between the Brooklands Society and the Friends of Brooklands Museum.

his year, the ‘summer season’ has been special for all of us who have been keen (and often impatient!) to see the restoration of Brooklands, with the opening of the Finishing Straight in June, and the inauguration of the Scoreboard at the Reunion in August. Although the summer is now behind us, there is another landmark event coming up in November – the opening of the Flight Shed, the last phase of the Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Race Track Revival project. There is no doubt that the developments throughout this year will ensure that 2017 will be remembered long after the cement has dried. Reported elsewhere in this edition is the appointment of Tamalie Newbery, replacing Allan Winn early next year. I have congratulated Tamalie on her appointment and welcomed her on behalf of the Brooklands Trust Members – we look forward to working with her as she moves Brooklands onwards and upwards over the coming years. Work has been continuing with the redrafting and simplification of our constitution, and a draft has been circulated to the Committee for comments. When we have finalised the

I mentioned in the last edition that it was inevitable that subscriptions will have to rise in the course of the next few months and this has proved to be the case – full details will be published shortly. During those discussions on subscription rates we were keen to identify additional benefits for Club level members, who pay a significant premium over standard membership rates. One of the extremely popular existing benefits is of course access to our Clubhouse, but unfortunately members at other levels continue to try and access the bar, especially at busy events. In order to make it easier for CreativEvents (the Museum caterers) to identify Club level members we are proposing that the reverse of membership cards will be laminated in a different colour (we have already introduced a different reverse colour for Life Members).

Another topic under discussion within the Committee concerns the Bulletin, as we are keen to produce more content covering the history of Brooklands and the cars, aircraft and other artefacts exhibited at the Museum. Much of the knowledge on Museum exhibits rests with the army of 700-plus volunteers, so we are hoping to tap into that gold mine of information more often in future. Still on the subject of volunteers, many of you will know John Silver, who has been their dynamic and inspirational manager for several years. John has just retired and we wish him a long, healthy and happy retirement, and hope to see him in and around Brooklands for many years to come. We welcome as his successor Sue Lewin and we look forward to working with her closely in the future.

Finally an apology – there has been a problem with my ‘Brooklands Members’ e-mail account, which has been bouncing incoming e-mails, but hopefully this has now been restored. Sorry for any frustration this has caused.
