Looking splendid, the 1923 Alfa Romeo RL Targa Florio (Gareth Tarr).

Visitors to this year’s Double Twelve will have seen a display of the 1927 Delage Grand Prix cars that won the manufacturers’ world championship and the Museum owns one of these. Two further cars were built in the mid-1930s for Prince Chula and the second of these was in the concours at Hampton Court, although ironically it didn’t race until 1947. The only Bentley to take part in the first Le Mans, a 1922 three-litre, was in competi- tion and had also appeared at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este (see September-October

MERRYWEATHER ON GUARD

Bulletin for a fuller description). There were several other cars in the concours

from the Brooklands period although there is no record of these appearing at the Surrey circuit. Notable was a 1931 Bugatti Type 54 of which similar models were raced at Brooklands (ironi- cally photos of the car for the Concours brochure were taken in front of the Jackson Shed). Also looking splendid was a 1923 Alfa Romeo RL Targa Florio, an example of the car that was to establish the Milanese manufacturer’s reputation. Gareth Tarr
