BTM TALKS
hat an excellent year it has been for both the Brooklands Trust Members and the Museum, with another series of fascinating talks and brilliant events, from the Double Twelve and Finishing Straight re-opening to the Reunion and the BTM-financed Scoreboard and our own Classic Car Show. Our talks programme has taken us far and wide in subjects and guests and our Motor Sport Legends series has, for me, been the highlight of the year. We had Hunt@40, Patrick Tambay, John McGuinness and James Whitham, Howden Ganley, Ian Hutchinson, the tribute to the late Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown and the evening with Tony Brooks. I had waited a long time for that evening and it did not disappoint. My thanks go out to all our guest speakers, especially Steve Parrish, Simon Taylor and Steve Cropley, without whom the Motor Sport Legends would be just a dream. We have four events still to come this year. First, on Thursday 2nd November, an evening in the company of author Paul Smiddy who has just published a book on the Hon Mrs Victor Bruce, Brooklands racer, pioneering aviatrix and business woman, 50 years ahead of her time. The next Classic Talk of the season will be given by Paul Ross and his subject is 'The First 70 years of Silver City Airways'. Our final Sunday lunch event for 2017 will be in the company of fellow Brooklands Trust Member and artist John Whurr on Sunday 26th November. Thursday 14th December will see the final talk for 2017 and what a way to finish – with Ian Glover and Ron Ayres of the Bloodhound SSC Project. So, what does 2018 hold in store? Well I hope you will be inspired by the diversity of subjects and the quality of our presenters. We will start on 18th January with guests from Transport for London and the subject of the £17-billion project, Crossrail, now formally the Elizabeth Line, Europe’s biggest rail infrastructure programme. On Thursday 15th February we play host to a return visit from Harry Sherrard with the subject ‘The History of Goodwood’. On the evening of Thursday 1st March we have
W
in prospect a very special evening to mark and celebrate the end of an era here at Brooklands as we say au revoir to Allan Winn. The event will be hosted by Steve Cropley and myself, as we take a poignant and happy look back at Allan’s remark- able achievements since 2003. This will be an

evening not to be missed. On Thursday 15th March, accomplished motor sport competitor and National Hunt jockey Gillian Goldsmith is our guest, her subject the history of HWM (Hersham and Walton Motors). We will be screening a documentary made by Gillian followed by a question and answer session. From one extreme to another – we will welcome Fraser Corsan, the world record-holder for Fastest Speed Flown in a Wingsuit, who will share his experiences in jumping from an aircraft at 42,000ft and travelling at over 249mph! We hope he has both feet on the ground when he visits Brooklands on Thursday 12th April. The old adage ‘Practice Makes Perfect’ rings true with us on the subject of digital media. We have made significant progress both in terms of quality and quantity, but we need to refine our offering still further. One major step forward for both BTM TV and our pod-casts will be our ability to directly record the audio at talks now that the new sound-desk has been installed in the Napier Room. All the archive video material and pod-casts can be found at brooklandsmuseum. com/btm/archive
