collection and even his overalls and study curtains, was loaned to the Museum by Hugh’s executor Derek Orgles. Derek in turn generously left the Collection to the Museum as a bequest in his own will. On 11th April the Deed of Assignment was completed and the collection became the property of the Museum. It includes the ex-Locke King 1904 Siddeley, ‘Daisy’, reputedly the first car to ever drive around the Brooklands Track. The collection remains on dis- play in the Campbell Shed with ‘Daisy’ where it has been enjoyed by visitors since 1991. Puzzle game We are grateful to David Ashworth for donating an unusual puzzle game made up of wooden blocks, with a different picture on each side. One side shows the Napier-Railton racing on the Brooklands Banking, another has a train, another battleships and a fourth an aeroplane. There is no manufacturer’s name or marking on it. ESTATES AND HERITAGE Site work

After a successful pilot scheme last year, a high- ways apprentices selection course was organised jointly by Kier Highways and Surrey County Council Highways staff at the Museum from 8th to 19th May. As well as helping both organisations to recruit potential new staff from within Surrey, this initiative benefited the Museum with professional repairs carried out as part of the training programme in the Campbell car park entrance immediately south of the Paddock. The increasingly uneven and damaged Campbell Entrance roadway has also been patched with tarmac, this being Historic England’s approved method for temporary ‘health and safety’ repairs

to Scheduled sections of Race Track. A number of potentially dangerous trees were felled by Redwood Tree Services around the Museum site during May with the approval of Elmbridge Borough Council Tree Officers. Further dead or dangerous trees (particularly silver birches self-seeded over 30 years ago) will be tackled as soon as possible. Three additional people have been trained as Museum forklift operators, including several ‘heritage team volunteers’ who are regularly involved with our weekly work parties in relocating large exhibits, sorting temporary storage compounds and clearing specific areas to assist our contractors.
