He showed in-car footage from an event called the South Downs Stages Rally which included driving round Goodwood anti-clockwise – make-shift chicanes slowing cars down where there was no run-off area. He also drove a Land Rover Freelander in Rally GB.

Of all the events he has participated in, Harry said that the Tuareg Rally was his favourite. This takes place in North Africa and he described it as 'the Dakar Rally for amateurs’, with stages of up to 250 to 300 kilometres (150 to 190 miles) every day for seven days. I am now in my fourth year of organising and hosting the Brooklands Trust Members’ talks and during that time one name has always been at the top of your request list – Tony Brooks. Thanks to Simon Taylor, the legendary Formula One driver from the 1950s made a rare appearance with us on the evening of 1st June to coincide with Brooks and Moss winning the British GP in 1957 at Aintree in the Vanwall 60 years ago. To mark this special occasion, Sir Gerald Acher, Brooklands Museum Trust Chairman, presented both gentlemen, along with Steve Cropley, Editor of Autocar, with recovered concrete sections of the priceless original Brooklands Track.

The Goodwood Revival is an invitation-only event and in 2012 Harry was offered the chance to race his Sunbeam Rapier in the St Mary’s Trophy at Lord March’s fabled weekend. Once accepted, everything is free for the drivers, including the wonderful Saturday night party which that year had a theme of ‘Dr Zhivago’. Irish, former Williams Grand Prix driver, Derek Daly was the other driver of Harry’s Rapier in the St Mary’s Trophy, Derek’s first race for 20 years, having come out of retirement specifically for this event.

Another Northern Ireland motor sports char- acter is Paddy Hopkirk whose career included third place in the 1962 Monte Carlo Rally driving a Sunbeam Rapier. It was appropriate that Paddy was guest of honour at the launch of Harry’s book at the RAC last year. Harry is rightly proud that his book is in the club’s library – under ‘Driver biographies – S’ – Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, Jo Siffert… err Harry Sherrard. aired a piece on the World War One Fighter Pilot Albert Ball, VC, DSO, Two Bars and MC, who was killed 100 years ago on 7th May in Annoeullin, France. The RAF Museum at Hendon has put together a tribute to Albert, including flight logs and personal diaries. Clare Paul, the museum’s First World War Education Officer, has agreed to be our guest speaker, along with Albert’s remain- ing relatives, and there will be an opportunity to see some of his documents. 17th August will be an evening not to be missed.
