John Reaks addresses the audience (Gareth Tarr).

most notorious controversies – Ayrton Senna rammed into Alain Prost at the first corner, the Brazilian thus winning the World Championship. Designed by John Barnard, the B190 used a 3.5- litre V8 Ford-Cosworth HB engine. Piquet’s initial team-mate for that 1990 season was Alessandro Nannini, who was involved in a helicopter crash mid-season, suffering injuries that were to end his career. He was replaced by Roberto Moreno and the Japanese GP was an emotional one-two for the Brazilian duo. John gave a brief history of the Benetton team, which started life as Toleman in 1981, became Benetton in 1984, Renault in 2002, then Lotus from 2012 before reverting to Renault in 2015.

The majority of the evening was based around what it is like to own and run a GP car. John’s is used mainly for demonstration runs such as at Brooklands – at the end of the straight on the Mercedes-Benz World track he is reaching 140mph. That illustrates one of the problems of an F1 car for the novice driver – it’s not so much the fantastic acceleration or braking but the speed at which things happen; with a nought to

100mph time of 8.6 seconds that is perhaps understandable. The new-to-F1 driver also has to learn techniques such as braking before a corner and then driving through it, otherwise the car has no rear down-force and spins. At Spa, for example, the B190 pulled 4G through Pouhon corner and John couldn’t keep his head straight. Of course, all this fun costs money. An engine

rebuild is required every 1,500 miles at a cost of £35,000, indeed overall running costs are reck- oned to be at least £50 per mile. Money is not the only challenge in keeping the 27-year-old car going. Some of the replacement parts were only manufactured during its competitive period so ‘new’ items are aged, even if unused. John was having particular difficulty replacing the spark-box until a top Mercedes electronics engineer came to his aid, pulling an old spark-box to bits then building a replacement from brand new components as a hobby project. One other example of how F1 car design has moved on in that length of time is the wheel-nuts, which are painted red or black depending which side of the car they go on. This is important
