Dear Chris,


My travelling companion John Holme and I had, earlier in the year, been tempted with a certain advertisement in motoring magazines offering classic car hire and rallies in sunny Mallorca. A wide selection of classic cars were there tempting us on their menu (a bit like the daily grilled sardines and calamari no doubt on the lunchtime menu on the beach front when we arrived) – Jaguar E-type convertible, Austin Healey, Porsche Speedster replica, Ferrari 308 GT4, Triumph TR4, Lotus Elan, Ford Mustang etc. We thought a five-day mini-adventure a week after Easter would not be too hot and reasonably priced before the summer, certainly more agreeable than an Easter egg hunt in the garden with the grand-kids. We agreed on the lovely powder blue TR4 and booked.


Naturally we laughed to ourselves on the plane, over a complimentary in-flight G and T, how the old girl would probably come to a glamorous stop on day one, overheating up a mountain etc and we would be off to Hertz for a euro-box replacement.

Well that didn’t happen... on route to pick her up my phone went with the rental company very politely suggesting the starter motor was proving unreliable and she was staying in the shade. We were initially disappointed as John had owned a TR4 in powder blue in his youth and that’s why we had chosen her. Anyway the charming English rental couple (who I can recommend) kindly offered us an upgrade from their stock at no extra cost – either a late Elan convertible or the Mustang. Naturally we were happy to take the
