all set to a pretty melody that walks the line between country and Americana, but could easily be a chart hit in either genre, and de- serves to be. We need more songs like this in our day and age, songs that allow us to stop and think about what another person is going through. Perhaps shine the light on the suf- fering instead of on ourselves. It’s a very im- portant message, wrapped up in an absolutely beautiful package. Open it up. Open your heart.

Negron Generations (Chuck Negron Music) As I sit here writing
this review, I just wit- nessed the solar eclipse and I am reminded that the last time I saw a solar
eclipse was in the late seventies. Back then, Three Dog Night was one of the biggest bands in the world. I saw them in 1974 in Greenville SC at the old Brown Box. (Shameless plug for Michael Buffalo Smith’s book, The Brown Box (
Lulu.com). I was 12 and it was my first concert. I have been a fan ever since. I never thought I would get to meet Chuck Negron but I got to meet him a few years ago in Asheville. Very nice guy and he still has the pipes.
Negron Generations is really not just
about Chuck’s daughters being the new gen- eration of singers in the family, although it is by all means a family affair. The album also includes three unreleased Three Dog Night tracks. The previous generation of Chuck Ne- gron music so to speak. The first thing you think when you see the CD cover is that Chuck is just promoting his daughters and you expect equal tracks from both of them as
well as him. This is not the case. There is only one track where Charlie and Annabelle sing lead vocals and that is on a remake of “Be My Baby/”Do I Love You.” The girls sing backup on the rest of the tracks except for the last three songs, so this is clearly a Chuck Negron CD.
I love this CD, especially the last three
tracks, and would love to hear the back story on these previously unleased tracks. I can’t tell if Cory and Danny are singing backup vo- cals but it’s all Chuck on the lead vocals. All I can say is if there are more unreleased tracks, please put them out. “The Letter” is beautiful, and I love the
strings solo. “Save our Ship” is vintage Three Dog Night, and “This is Your Captain Calling” reminds me of “The Show Must Go On” with- out the circus music. All three of these songs would have been hits if they were released in the ‘70’s or early ‘80’s. No doubt about it. They would be hits now if they received air play.
The new songs are very good also. They
almost need their own review. Anyone famil- iar with Chuck Negron’s life story will in- stantly understand the meaning behind the new tracks. Most of them were written by Chuck. These songs are basically Contempo- rary Christian songs with uplifting lyrics and are songs of redemption. My favorite of the new songs is “I’m on Fire.” Having read the book, Three Dog Nightmare, this song fol- lows Chuck’s life story and his redemption and forgiveness by God. The theme of all of the new songs is forgiveness and redemption. No sad songs here. This CD is well worth purchasing and
provides the listener with an uplifting and en- joyable musical experience. People who enjoy Christian music should especially enjoy this CD. It is only a shame that current radio sta- tions won’t play new music from classic rock artists. These songs are good, and I believe they could be big hits if only the recording in- dustry would promote them.
