Friends and Family React to Gregg’s Passing
“I’ve lost a friend and the world has lost one of the most soulful voices in rock and roll his- tory.” -Warren Haynes
“The fact that Gregg Allman was writing and singing the way he did at such a young age made him seem , like his brother Duane , al- most other worldly. He was such an inspira- tion to all of us kids who wanted nothing more than to be part of a band , a brother- hood . Especially those of us from the south- ern United States . We'll always hear your voice bud.” – Billy Bob Thornton
“Gregg Allman had a feeling for the blues very few ever have - hard to believe that magnificent voice is stilled forever.” - Charlie Daniels
"Gregg Allman was there when I needed him, and Rosalynn and I have always been grateful to him," Carter said in the state- ment. "I was very proud to participate in Mercer’s awarding Gregg an honorary doc- torate, and will attend the funeral to show my respect and concern." - Jimmy Carter “Even though I know that 99.99% of those that I'm addressing will never see this post, I still feel compelled to write this. I simply
wish to thank all of the people in Macon on Saturday that came to pay their respects. It was remarkable to witness such a show of humanity. For several days last week I had serious concerns for how the funeral of Gre- gory LeNoir Allman would be handled by the general public. In these times of 'celebrity', disrespectful moments seem to often occur in such situations. Rose Hill cemetery, in par- ticular, presented many security issues. I did not envy those with the task of how best to deal with it. The possibility of people sneak- ing into the site from over the hills, walking up the railroad tracks, etc. A true logistical nightmare for security. I had thought about this for days and voiced my fears to most that I talked with. Fortunately the ones that were in charge were much smarter than me. At some point the call was made to let the public come in to the cemetery for what had been made very clear through the media was to be a private graveside service. I was not there when the extended family arrived at the gravesite so I do not know for sure that what I experienced later was the same, but in my heart I believe it so. When we rode in we were parked some distance back from from the view of the amphitheater that surrounds the gravesite. We walked up and upon seeing the area I was overwhelmed by the sight of hundreds, if not thousands, of people sitting everywhere a person could fit. We came in at the end of the service and the family mem- bers were pausing at the casket before the long walk down the hill to the cars. As they left the gravesite the entire crowd of people were silent. Not one person yelled out 'Jaimoe', or 'Hey Cher', or anything else I would consider inappropriate....... Noth- ing....... Only silence and complete respect for the family and close friends in attendance. I was so proud of these people, almost all of whom I will never get to thank. The same held true for the family when gathering at the H&H and the Big House. People simply
