through.
JW Well immediately after the accident Berry had gone over to the Big House. WP Yeah. He was putting together a big to-do that night. It was going to be that some of the band members would play and the wives were to sing backup. It was called the B.O.’s Jive- Ass Review featuring the Rowdy Roadies and the Shady Ladies. It was his thing. He was putting it all together. He was going to play at this club on Saturday night in downtown Macon. I think it was called the Ad-lib club located on Cotton Ave. It was a club Frank Fenter had opened up. It was upstairs over an old used furniture store located downstairs. It was a big kind of a warehouse type room. Do you remember the place called the Trad- ing Post in downtown Macon right across from the city hall?
pital," but he told everyone "no I'm ok." But I guess when he got to the Big House he started acting disoriented. Basically he had like shaken his brain loose when he hit the side of that bus and it started to swell and hemor- rhage. I can remember calling Dickey who was up at the farm, I believe.
JW What was his first response. WP I told him to sit down, I had bad news. It just knocked the pins out from under him. Same thing with Gregg. Gregg was in New York at the time staying with a friend of his, I believe.
JW When did you first meet Chuck Leavell? WP Chuck Leavell had been around at Capri- corn. He was like this young kid piano player who had played with a couple of bands. He ended up going out on the road with Dr. John and Alex Taylor who were both Phil Walden clients at the time. He would come around the stage. In fact, he told me he used to set up his piano behind the stage and play along with the Brothers when they were playing. So he was a big fan and somebody we noticed. Gregg used to introduce him as the boy won- der. And of course Lamar was hired to play on the Brothers and Sisters album and eventu- ally be the replacement bass player. And Chuck had been playing on the album and he was invited to join the band as well.
Chuck Leavell.
JW Yeah. WP Anyway it was in the upstairs in that building. Basically he was doing some run- ning around for this before the accident hap- pened. When he had the accident everybody said to Berry " hey you need to go to the hos-
JW So he ended up playing on the album Laid Back as well. WP Yeah. That was going on kind of simulta- neously then. Chuck's another great guy and he just fit right in from the get go. I believe the first road gig he played was at the Univer- sity of Michigan at the field house in Decem- ber 1972.
JW Where did the Brothers and Sisters recording sessions take place? Also can you describe how they went?
