“My heart breaks today at the passing of soul brutha Gregg Allman. Blessings and peace to all the Allman family.” - Keith Urban

“When I first went to work at Capricorn Stu- dios, I remember Duane or Gregg Allman showing up at the studio, standing behind Johnny in the control room from my view from the drum booth. They had just gotten off the road. They were kind of studio rats like us. We were the opening act in Miami for The

ABB first gig after Duane's death, and I was touched at how the five of them did the deed. When Gregg would get home from touring, he could hang out for a day or two, then he would say “okay, let's get to it,” ready to go back on the road. Gregg, Lamar and me walked into a Min-

neapolis club after a gig and played a whole set of blues with Gregg on guitar. When we were in LA, Gregg said that every time he went through a part of Beverly Hills, he would get pulled over...they would say, "hey Gregg, what have you been up to"?

– Bill Stewart

“I can’t profess that I knew Gregg Allman on a deeply personal level. Although my book Midnight Riders (Little, Brown & Company, 1995) was the first full-scale biography of the Allman Brothers Band, I didn’t know Gregg the way I know some of the other members of the band. I interviewed him a few times, spent some time hanging out with him, but he was always shy and reserved. Gregg seemed much more comfortable standing in the shadows than he ever did under the glare of the spotlight, especially one held by a jour- nalist.

But like many other people, I did know

Gregg on a deeply personal level through his music and felt a profound sense of loss when news broke Saturday afternoon that he had died at the age of 69 from liver cancer. It

seemed way too soon. In many ways, Gregg Allman was like Keith Richards — he had cheated death so many times that he was one of those people you half expected to always be here. Allman was one of the greatest of the blues singers, and if his voice always carried with it a sense of anguish and torment, he came by it honestly.” –Scott Freeman, author

“It’s the end of an era. But, as they say, the road goes on forever.” – Rook Goldflies (former Allman Brothers bassist)

“This one hurts a lot. This was one of my he- roes. He made it seem possible for a kid to come out of Macon, Georgia, make a name for himself, and make it in this business. He was such an inspiration to so many of us that tried so hard to imiutate him but couyld just never quite do it the same.”

- Jason Aldean

“The Mercer community mourns the loss of honorary alumnus Gregg Allman. It was just over a year ago when President Jimmy Carter awarded him with and honoirary doctorate at commencement. Thoughts and prayers to Dr. Allman’s family.”

- Mercer University
