JAMES CALEMINE Insured Beyond the Grave
by Michael Buffalo Smith My first introduction to writer James
Calemine came during the early days of GRITZ magazine, circa 1998. I recall speaking with him on the phone and we hit it off imme- diately. It seemed we had a lot of similar in- terests in both music and authors, and soon we established a friendship. James would soon become a contributor to the magazine, churning out album reviews, book reviews and interviews, including an in depth conver- sation with Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, a great piece on the Georgia Sea Is- land Singers, and his own continuing “Soul Food Tour,” which took us off the beaten trail into some of the south’s finest barbecue restaurants. This year, James struck a deal with a
publisher who has released a fine collection of many of Calemine’s interviews, reviews and commentaries under the title Insured Beyond the Grave. We spoke with James about his life growing up in the south, his early forays into writing, and the new book.
MB I’m going to go back a few years. Tell us about where you were born and raised JC Well, I was raised on the Georgia Coast, el- ementary school, middle school, high school. I graduated from the University of Georgia, which growing up down here at about 15 or
16, I think the statute of limitations has lifted on this, but, I copped a book from the li- brary- and I was already a music and litera- ture freak- and when I was about 15, I copped this book called The True Adventures Of The Rolling Stones. I took it home and devoured it and I realized the writer was living on the coast and down here there is a lot of old music traditions, you know, the coastal folks like the Georgia Sea Island Singers and the Macintosh County Shouters, so growing up on the coast, it could be worse, that sort of in- fluenced my taste. Growing up on the coast, I was lucky.
