The Silver Travis Band Music On The Tracks at The Train Depot Landrum, SC August 26, 2017 It was a beautiful evening for a rock
and roll show in downtown Landrum, SC, the small southern town settled in between Cam- pobello, SC and Tryon, NC. A nice crowd gathered just beside the railroad tracks for a concert by The Silver Travis Band, a group founded just down the road in Spartanburg, SC back in 1981.
Upton (keyboards). Together they create powerful twin guitar leads and lush, beautiful vocal harmonies sometimes reminicent of The Eagles. Speaking of the Eagles, the band per-
formed one of the band’s biggest hits, “New Kid in Town” complete with harmony vocals. Beautiful. And the Skynyrd-esque “Chain Gang,” a Silver Travis original, went over as great as always, complete with Calvert’s ex- tended guitar solo. In a real treat, Abby Parrish, daughter
of bassist Joey, joined the band to sing an ab- solutely beautiful rendition of Roy Orbison’s (as covered by Linda Ronstadt) “Blue Bayou.” Abby is a music major from Converse College and a multi talented singer and instrumental- ist, and future superstar. The guys played several of their newer
original songs as well, including a very nice one called “You Lie,” and a new Calvert song called “Waiting for a Ride.” Good stuff. They have another new song they are playing that reminds me of classic Charlie Daniels Band called “Spirit in the Hills,” penned by blue- grass songwriter Brink Brinkman. An instant classic.
After a rocking “Whiskey Rock and The band sounded excellent from the
get go, and the audience was loving the vari- ety of music coming from the stage. The gr- roup performed a great mix of Southern rock classics, pop hits and originals. Silver Travis has always had a knack for
playing Marshall Tucker Band music. Maybe it’s because, as teennagers, they idolized their home town heroes. Among the MTB covers delivered during the show were a rocking “This Ol’ Cowboy” and an equally fun and compelling “Blue Ridge Mountain Sky.” These days, the band consists of found-
ing members Randall Calvert (guitar); Mike Satterfield (drums); and Joey Parrich (bass); along with Daniel Jackson (guitar) and Carey
Roller,” the guys invited me up to sing a cou- ple. I have performed “Can’t You See” hun- dreds of times, but tonight it just felt different. The surrounding guitars and har- monies made it feel different. Quite special. We also took it down to,the “Crossroads.” Lots of fun. Lest I forget, Carey Upton delivered an
absolutely beautiful solo on piano of Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are.” The boy can flat out sing. And play. It was quite a special evening from one
of the South’s best rock and roll bands. Too much fun.
