Kim Payne and Mike Callahan were laid off toward the end. It was basically a situation where things were starting to go down hill for the band. There were substance abuse prob- lems going on at that time and these guys took the fall for a multitude of sins that prob- ably were not completely their fault. It worked out alright. I think in the long run they were both kind of better off for getting out of it when they did
JW Who was responsible for keeping everyone on a schedule? WP I was. They hated to see me come. But they always did it and got the job done. And again, that was part of the success. It's that old cliché that the show must go on and it did. We never blew a gig that we were scheduled to make and had very few cancellations.
JW What are some of the original road- ies doing these days? WP Of course, Joe Dan and Red Dog are still involved with the band touring. Mike Calla- han moved back to Florida and I have basi- cally lost track of where he is or what he is doing. Kim Payne is down in Alabama and I believe he is working for a tire company from what I've heard. Scooter is in Alabama. Of course we all know what happened to Twiggs.
JW Of the original road crew who still resides in the Macon area? WP Myself and Joe Dan Petty. Chank is also still here in Macon.
JW Do you occasionally hook up with Joe Dan when he is off the road? WP I haven't seen him. Of course I just moved back here in April of 98,' so I haven't hooked up with him yet but I'd sure like to. I've seen Chank a couple of times. He works at Brown and Williamson Tobacco Co. Then there was another guy named Charles Bignon who worked for us who is still here in Macon.
JW Can you tell us some of your memo- ries and experiences at the Farm lo- cated outside of Macon? Also can you tell us about that large 6"X9" promo postcard of the band and crew taken at the farm? WP The farm was located in Juliette, Georgia. The movie Fried Green Tomatoes was filmed about three miles away from where the farm was located.
JW About how many miles out of Macon is the old farm located? WP It's about fifteen or twenty miles up High- way 87 from Macon. The movie Return to Macon County with Don Johnson and Nick Nolte was filmed up there. In fact that's where Dickey and Don Johnson first hooked up.
JW They met on the set while filming the movie right? WP Right. But the way the farm acquisition happened was when money was starting to come in and the guys in the band wanted to buy a piece of property with the idea of living

He didn't always go out on the road. He was a good friend of mine who helped out in the of- fice with the accounting and such in 1972. He was a valuable employee as well. He did go on tour with us occasionally. From time to time everybody came out on the road.
