“Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” We were going to explore more ways to


eat healthy on the road, including suggestions for taking stuff with you to avoid the crap food. We’ll go there next time. Now, I have something else to say… It’s been three short months since we


were together last. In that time we’ve lost two more iconic musicians. As I said in the June issue of Kudzoo, each time I hear of the loss of one of my musical heroes, I go into my In- tegrative Health and Nutrition Consultant and Coach mode. I wonder what happened and if I could have saved them. These two times were no different. May 18, I woke up around 5:30 a.m. I


have a bad habit of looking at Facebook when I can’t sleep and was alerted to Chris Cornell’s death. When I awoke again later, the news said it was an apparent suicide! WTF?! One of the reasons I love Soundgarden


and Temple of the Dog is because of Chris’s soulful voice that reflected pain and anguish. The period I was listening to them was espe- cially tough for me, and his voice touched that place we had in common. So, as unpopu- lar as it can be, let’s talk about depression. Chris Cornell suffered from depression


and drug addiction/abuse. Many people self medicate, trying to escape their demons. This compounds their problem. Recreational drugs, alcohol and prescription medications often cause more issues. There are usually side effects from prescriptions One can be suicidal thoughts. Medications change the chemicals in your body and not always for the best. A not-too-well-known fact that is gain- ing some attention is that many medications can deplete crucial vitamins and minerals that we need for good mental and physical


health. We have also learned that most of our


mental health is determined by our digestive system. It is thought that 90% of our sero- tonin is made there. Serotonin is billed as the “feel good” hormone. There are many other hormone and chemical interactions happen- ing there as well. If we don’t eat well, our di- gestive system doesn’t work properly and we suffer not only physical ailments, but also mental ones. Our minds and bodies are com- plicated and need proper nutrition, plenty of water, exercise, intimate/social connections and more. We need a reason to get up in the morning and a reason to keep going, a “pur- pose,” if you will, and not the one Steve Mar- tin discovered in The Jerk. Life can be hard as hell. If we don’t see the purpose, it’s really hard to remember that there is one. I get it. Life on the road as a musician


is tough! You’re rushing from place to place, your job is to please others, and you eat what you can in a hurry. Even if you’ve been able to keep connections with loved ones while on the road, they still may be far away. You get weary. Sometimes you seek escape. Maybe you drink or do drugs. Maybe you pig out on junk/comfort food. Maybe you’re OK while you’re busy and in the thick of things, but when you lay down at night or during the ride
