Campus Corner Sheridan College Viol Consort
The Sheridan College Viol Consort performed in May of 2017 under the direction of Dr. Mark Elliot Bergman, including programs at Whitney Center for the Arts and the Green House Living retirement home in Sheridan, WY. The concerts included music by Abel, Kühnel, and Gombert as well as anonymous English consort music. The Sheridan College Viol Consort is proud to promote early music in the Cowboy State.
Founded in the fall of 2015 by Dr. Bergman, the Sheridan College Viol Consort (SCVC) specializes in music of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. All members of the ensemble perform on viols (also known in Italian as “viola da gambas”). Viols are typically six- string, fretted instruments held between the knees and bowed with an underhand grip. The viol first appeared in Europe in the late 15th century and subsequently became one of the most popular European instruments during the 16th, 17th, and early 18th centuries.
The SCVC includes both students
and community members and performs a wide variety of consort music from England, Germany, France, and other countries. Performances take place at the Whitney Center for the Arts in Sheridan Wyoming and other community venues.
