Regional Round-Up

Southwest District ... President - Sharon Reetz

O

ver here in the Southwest District, this past year was a blast! Just in case you are curious, our district is

comprised of: Big Piney, Cokeville, Evanston, Jackson, Kemmerer, Mountain View, Lyman, Pinedale, and Star Valley. The end of this past school year and over the summer months, teachers and students in the Southwest District were busy creating well-rounded students!

In Pinedale: Greg Allen and

Justin Smith took 30 band and choir students to Disney World to perform over their Spring Break in April. According to Greg,

they had, “5 days of fun, strong performances, and meaningful workshops…I just can’t wait for the next one.” What a great experience for these young adults.

At the end of May in Big Piney, Coulter Neale’s middle

school choir presented their first junior musical, Mulan, and it was a great success! Musicals can be tricky in small schools, and I am so glad to live in a district where size does not stop our fearless teachers! Every summer, Kari Allred from Star Valley, takes her choir

students on a retreat. They go to a cabin for a couple of days and do lots of team-building activities and lots of singing! One activity is the color war, which is started with the poem “The Crayon Box that Talked.” This poem and the color war is used to discuss how everyone is unique and different, but when we mix it all together, in a choir, we can paint a pretty cool picture!

The lighting of the lanterns is another activity used at the

end of the retreat to spotlight each student. All the candles are unlit at the beginning, then one person at a time presents positive comments about another person in the choir and lights his or her candle; this continues until all the candles are lit. In this activity, they discuss the fact that when you give money or food away you have less of it, but when we spread light and love, more is created. Kari wants her students to understand how important spreading light and love is in their choir!
