Secondary VP’s Message Why Music . . . because we need it O

ur theme for this issue: “Music: Central to a Well-Rounded Education” inspired me to ask a question of my students at marching band camp. “Why

Music?” I have not edited the responses for spelling and/or grammar, but I think the message shines through. Hopefully, you will find these revealing and somewhat entertaining. We can study, poll, and research till we are blue in the face and the answer remains clear – “Why Music?” Answer - because we need it.

Albert Einstein believed that music

echoes the laws, structure, and harmony of The Universe. Music stimulates creative genius. Music requires massive amounts of effort, concentration, and caliber. It builds you, in every way. That’s all I need to know. – Caeson

I love music because it helps me

express my emotions. I am not a person to express my emotions a lot, and music helps me lose some of those feelings. I also enjoy making music, because it is a kind of magic in a way. It can cheer people up and transport them to a different world. – Emily

Why music? Music is something anyone/everyone can connect to. No matter what genre. It’s the words that we can’t speak. It influences people. It helps people. It encourages people. Without music life would b flat. Buh-dum-tsssss. Why music? Because music brings people together. It lets them bring out their feelings that might be trapped inside. – Laycee

Yo dawg music is super lit, it has taught me to be a good musician and I really appreciate it because it makes me feel good when I execute a song or line perfectly and playing music makes me feel good. – Jack

Music is the one thing where I have

a place to be more of myself. As the great Michel Maclean said, “the world always

needs background music”. I want to provide that music. – CJ

Why music, you ask? Well, it’s

complicated. Music gives me such an incredible feeling. It’s perfect for any mood. If I’m sad it can cheer me up or it can further my sadness if that is what I choose. Music is so expressive. Yes, there are times when you must do a certain style, but then there are times that you are free to make the music flow how you want to. It’s like dance, which I love. Which is why I also love music. I love music because it gives me so many emotions and feelings that I can’t help loving it. – Alayna

Music is, and always will be, a

way to express feeling. Whether you are creating the music or moving to it, music shows your emotions and thoughts. Music communicates feelings in a way that words can’t. – Megan

To me music is what helps me

cope with all the things that r not going very well with my life. Without music, I don’t think I would be able to deal with the things that happen at my home. Music helps me feel better and without it I’m not too sure what would happen. Music is an actual part of me. – Lilly

Music has completely changed

my life. I remember the first day of band in 6th grade. That feeling of playing my first note (correctly) on the clarinet was like no other. After that first day, I realized that I loved band. I love making music with others that feel the same way that I do. Playing music is different than anything else I’ve ever done. I’ve found friends through music and I found my favorite thing to do. Music has made my life drastically better and I’m excited to see how it will play a role in the rest of my life. – Ashlyn

I choose to do music because it is

one of the only activities that I have enjoyed doing with my life. When I’m at school and I have band that day it instantly makes my day infinitely better. And it might be because in band I am respected for who I am. – Spencer

Music is important to me because

it’s hard work that pays off. Music takes a range of different skills that require practice and determination. It’s also fun so... – Garrett

Why not music? Music is an

expression and an extension of someone’s personality. It’s a way for
