Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch The ONS Crime Survey this summer showed


that 8.7% of households in England and Wales are members of Neighbourhood Watch, across the country the average is 37% of homes, but here in Broadstone that fi gure is almost 70%.


There is some argument about whether this is because we have a lower crime rate than many other localities, or whether our high level of membership contributes to our safe neighbourhood – which seems a big claim, but there is evidence that the two are linked... perhaps those who join NW are more likely to also use more crime prevention measures, be more likely to report suspicious behaviour and have a closer relationship not only with neighbours, but also the police and other authorities.


An initiative run by the national Neighbourhood Watch organisation last month asked everyone to commit to Have a Cuppa with a neighbour, trying to build better community relationships and reduce loneliness. Now that we are all getting back into the routine of work, school and other clubs that break over the summer, let’s all take time to have a chat with new neighbours and people who we simply haven’t talked to for a while. You could


start by asking your neighbour if they are a member of the Watch and encouraging them to join – give them my email and we will sort out the collection of their £1 membership fee and welcome pack!


We have now launched the Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch Facebook and Twitter pages. We will use these to share messages from Dorset Police, Traffi c and News Alerts and other items that may be of interest that comes up between newsletters!
