Councillor Update

We would like to start by congratulating Broadstone Horticultural Society for presenting yet another brilliant show. It is always a delight to wander round the displays and marvel at the outstanding quality of the competition entries and pick up advice on how to grow such large leeks or perfect dahlia blooms. It is also good to see the children taking a great delight in the show and entering the various competitions. It augurs well for the future success of the Society.

Broadstone centre has once again looked a picture, with a continuous display of flowers and ornamental grasses and shrubs. It is a great credit to the Broadstone in Bloom volunteers who devote so much of their own time to improving the appearance of the Broadway and making it a more attractive place for everyone to enjoy. The annual judging of the hanging baskets takes place towards the end of August, so the winners will be announced in next month’s issue.

We seem to spend a lot of our time fighting to keep our precious bus services as cuts to subsidies continue to hit routes in the north of the Borough. We are pleased that our efforts have once again paid off as the threatened No. 3 service between Wimborne and Corfe Mullen has been reprieved thanks to Vikki and Corfe Mullen County Councillor Susan Jefferies. This means the service between Broadstone and Poole will not be affected.

More and more residents are telling us they see no point in raising issues with the Council, because no-one listens. Examples quoted include the hike in car parking charges, toilet closures including at Baiter, and now the construction of a zebra crossing in Lewesdon Drive – which residents and many parents don’t want. Apart from the cost, £30,000, there is the removal of a road narrowing feature designed to slow traffic down and a redesign of one of the junctions. Our protestations, an alternative suggestion, and a petition with 200+ signatures have all been ignored and the work rushed through.

Baiter toilet saga continues. The possibility of re- opening the toilets was discussed at a committee meeting on 19th July. While Mike and other opposition councillors voted in favour of re-opening the toilet block, the Conservative chair, by using his casting vote to vote against the re-opening, ensured the toilets would remain closed. However, there has now been yet another major U-turn as a result of yet more adverse publicity in the national newspapers. Whether this is permanent or not, only time will tell. It really is a great pity the current administration did not listen to opposition councillors and the

public in the first place. At least Poole’s reputation would not have been damaged. We accept that the Council’s finances are under pressure, but there are lessons to be learned from those Local Authorities, like Pembrokeshire County Council, that have successfully found alternative viable solutions.

We would like to draw your attention to the Council’s current consultation on its proposed Draft Local Plan which focuses primarily on the need to build over 14,000 new homes by 2033. While the majority of these can be accommodated on brownfield sites, there is pressure to increase the urban density by building upwards. There is also pressure being put on the green belt. We urge everyone to look at the plan at: http://www.poole. gov.uk/planning-and-buildings/planning/planning- policy/poole-local-plan/

Our next Saturday surgeries in Broadstone Library are on 9th September and 7th October from 10am until 12 noon.
