Councillor Update

Earlier this summer, it was my pleasure to see the Poole Park railway running again after a short closed period in the spring. The grand re-opening in August was a great fun day. One of the senior attendees was a resident who had attended the opening of the children’s railway the fi rst time, in 1949. Amazing! The attraction was very busy, with a queue of children of all ages waiting to ride, which was good to see. The council started the re-tendering process sometime ago, when I was a member of the environment committee. The contract renewal needs to be done periodically and the previous operator had been running the railway for 30 years. It always surprises me how long these contractual changes take and how the local press sometimes gets the wrong end of the stick during times of change. However, that is local government for you: never a dull moment. On the other hand, it is pleasing to report that the new operator is the Friends of Poole Park, a voluntary organisation that has the interests of the park and our residents use of green spaces at heart. The Friends of Poole Park have put out a call for more volunteer drivers of the train, so if you are interested and have the time, please contact the Friends on their website.

It was also good to be able to support an application to the Lottery Fund for several million pounds to further improve Poole Park. It was even better to hear that the application has been successful. Hurray! It will mean further progress with the improvements, for example, to the lake. All of this without any cost to you, the hard pressed tax payer. Without this, the council is so hard up that it would simply not be possible to spend these sums on our amenities.

Additionally, a Lottery grant application has now been made for improvements to Upton House. For many years, almost half a million pounds of your council tax money has been subsidising the running of the property. I, along with the other councillors on the environment committee, learned that this cannot continue, as that huge amount simply cannot be taken from the council’s hard pressed budget, year after year. After agreeing a new business plan for the park, in future years the council offi cers have to make sure Upton Park breaks even – without your council tax subsidy. Your councillors will monitor progress and let you know how they get on.

Other issues continue to arise around Broadstone. I am dealing with requests for yellow lines, planning applications, school governance, repairing pot holes, etc. Please continue to let me know how we can help by letter, phone or email. Or come to the next surgery in the library on 16th September, from 10am - 12pm.
