in operation to carry out research activities like these. The same is valid for investigation of ice fall from rotor blades and for measuring icing effects on noise, but it would be more suitable and efficient to be able use a dedicated test site for this.”
He believes the centre will be of use for suppliers from all over the world. “There is a test centre in Canada, but there the main issue is glace ice and freezing rain. In Sweden, the main challenge is in-cloud icing, which leads to rime icing.
“The Cold Climate Test Centre will make it easier for new suppliers to set up their de/anti-icing solutions in real conditions, and turbine manufacturers who develop new models can offer well-tested systems at shorter time- to-market. This will result in increased competition and thus a better quality of the new wind power plants,” concludes Daniel.
Daniel Gustafsson, Development Project Manager at Vattenfall and technical expert on icing conditions.
SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT SPOT The test centre will be built and operated by RISE. Now work is continuing to determine which location best meets the meteorological and geographic requirements of the test centre.
“We cannot yet say where the test centre is to be built, but we are currently investigating five locations in more detail,” says Project Manager Stefan Ivarsson at RISE.
The Cold Climate Test Centre will be an easily accessible test site – for both personnel and technical equipment. It will provide wind and temperature measurements from calibrated instruments on meteorological masts, and will offer full service and continuous monitoring from long distance when testing organisations are not at the site.

Great Britain’s most easterly town of Lowestoft is situated in North East Suffolk, and has a long successful association with the energy sector for more than 50 years. The area can boast a highly skilled marine and engineering supply chain, developed from the Oil & Gas fields of the Southern North Sea.
Wind farm developments off the UK’s East Coast, places Lowestoft in a prime location for companies to develop their business. Lowestoft Port has played a pioneering role in the UK’s Round 1 Scroby Sands wind farm and pivotal in many Round 2 projects; including the design and construction of Dudgeon’s Sub Station platform.
Lowestoft Port, is currently the Operations and Maintenance base for both the Greater Gabbard and East Anglian ONE wind farm and is the Operations Management base for the Galloper wind farm.
Working alongside Lowestoft based 4C Offshore Ltd; Waveney District Council has developed a new dedicated online platform
