downtime and disruption, the C.S. Sovereign was mobilised to complete the repair in under a month; the industry average for a power cable repair is over 100 days and frequently more. Following her return to port, the vessel immediately mobilised and departed to a second power cable repair at an offshore windfarm in the North Sea.


PLANNING AND CABLE PROTECTION The first line of defence to ensure that


a cable route is carefully selected to avoid hazards, difficult terrain and busy shipping routes is proper planning, FEED studies and initial route engineering, based on in-depth survey data. Route clearance, cable armouring and mattressing can minimise risk to the cable and damage caused by abrasion or entanglement, but only through adequate burial can cable be placed totally out of reach of such potentially harmful interaction.


The Q1000 jet trencher is designed for pre and post-lay trenching as well as simultaneous lay and burial of pipelines, umbilicals and cables of up to 20 inches in diameter to a burial depth of three metres at speeds of up to 400 metres per hour. The Q1000 is currently mobilised on Global Marine Group’s 6,200 tonne CS Recorder, having already this summer successfully completed remedial burial works on the CIEG (Channel Islands Electricity


Grid) power cable between Guernsey and Jersey. The CS Recorder is a high bollard pull, dynamically positioned cable installation vessel with two main cable tanks that allow the installation of up to around 5,200t of submarine cable, and the vessel is capable of carrying out a full spectrum of repairs from transition joint bay to deep water. Her next project is at an offshore wind farm in the UK, including inshore trenching, offshore plough burial and retrofit J-tube installation.


CABLE STORAGE Incorrectly storing spare cable can result in the cable becoming damaged over time. As a result, when a repair is needed the cable may not be in a suitable


condition for use, which would increase lead times and delay repair plans. The Global Marine Group offers cable owners and operators storage and management facilities for their most valuable assets within the company’s purposely-built and strategically located facility in Portland, Dorset. The facility has been providing cable storage for 18 years, with a capacity of 8,750m3 in power cable carousels, and 33 telecoms cable tanks.
