Lee, the trainer of this super-tech simulator is Cap’n! It is literally hot off the press (always wanted to say that!) with a list of the most impressive simulators Crane Simulators from the Norwegian based OSC which includes two full mission crane simulators – which as well as providing ship- to-shore, rig crane and gantry crane options can also be configured for offshore crane operations. Lee goes on to say that the full mission crane simulators include the authentic ‘chairs’ built inside four metre diameter spheres, whereupon entering there is a 270 degree seamless high resolution projector image, this is created by again state-of-the-art projector screens – 7 in total!! The centre has six desktop crane simulators – in other words anything is possible!


MORE INTERESTING BITS


It boasts the only independent training organisation in the UK to offer such a comprehensive range of integrated Kongsberg ship, offshore vessel engine and control room HV, DP, radar and VTS simulators.


Powered by Kongsberg’s latest K-Sim full picture technology, they allow training to be provided on all vessel types from offshore vessels, tugs and tankers, to deep sea vessels and cruise liners.


Lee and Ann go on to say that they are currently awaiting MCA approval which will open up further opportunities


for additional courses – adding to an already impressive portfolio. This dynamic training centre allows trainees/students to reduce their “sea time” training by DP 30 proving to be a double whammy of economy and efficiency.


WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER


Lee goes on to describe that systems are not limited to predetermined parameters, these can be configured to the clients’ requirements, truly bespoke training solutions, be it different loads or vessels rig formations, the parameters are endless. Weather conditions, wave height, propulsion – the control room/ instructors room is known affectionately as the God Room.


Any scenario may be set up if there is a particular task to undertake for the exercise, any problems arising. All the training exercises are recorded and students can retire to the briefing room once training has completed to have a formal de-brief.


Evidently the graphics are so pin-sharp they have even modelled the Humber and in order that accurate piloting of the vessel, images were provided from right along the estuary using GPS camera, before being sent to the USA digitally to be recreated for this facility!!


IN A CLAM SHELL There is no end to their foresight and innovation – we look forward to following their course in future issues.


Again this is just a drop in a simulated ocean, however I am compelled to return to have further discussions to find out about their successes – as you can imagine they are already in demand for courses, they are forward thinkers, school groups regularly attend the facilities – they are our future….


I could have happily continued discussions, however time and tide and all that ….but to conclude Lee mentioned that on a personal note there were no facilities when he was on the first step of his career as a naval cadet to train apart from Southampton – it is particularly poignant with the maritime heritage in the Humber that this company has its base here.
