BUILDING A HOT SPOT FOR ICY WIND POWER


Cold climate demands a reliable wind power technology. Therefore, RISE Research Institute of Sweden, is aiming to establish a test centre where the global wind industry can test turbines and components in cold conditions


Cold climate areas offer a great potential for wind power, all around the globe. But the chill and ice demand a great deal of technology, which requires optimal testing conditions for turbines and other components. That is the reason why the Swedish research institute RISE is planning a cold climate test centre for the wind industry, focused on test, validation and certification.


The Cold Climate Test Centre will be the world’s first cold climate test station for wind power located inland. It will be a full-scale test station situated in the northern part of Sweden, in a location with long periods of cold, ice and strong winds – optimal conditions for testing wind turbines, turbine components and sub systems in cold climate and icing conditions.


COMPANIES WANT RELIABLE COMPONENTS To establish the Cold Climate Test Centre, RISE runs a national project in cooperation with energy companies, academy and institutes, financed by Vinnova, the Swedish national research funding agency for innovation and sustainable growth.


One of the energy companies is Vattenfall, who operates more than 1,000 wind turbines from the cold Nordic to southern Europe.


“We need suppliers who can deliver reliable turbines to new windfarms in northern Sweden,” says Daniel Gustafsson, Development Project Manager at Vattenfall and technical expert on icing conditions.


NEED FOR PERFORMANCE GUARANTEES


Now the suppliers have to test their turbines and de-icing systems in new commercial windfarms, which is not optimal. Research and development have different targets than full cale production.
